Prayer

As the mayor I have been most humbled by the National Day of Prayer and in particular the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.  My first year as I walked to the podium to read a City of Yakima Proclamation I could hardly speak.  It was one of those few moments in my life when I couldn’t believe I was standing where I was standing and carrying the responsibility I was carrying.  Have you ever had those moments?  How did I get here?  As someone who was far from God and remembers easily what I was like in those days I’m in awe of what God has done for me.  He gave me love for my community that makes me want to serve it.  He has surrounded me with people who are as committed to the cause of Christ and abandoning themselves to serve our community too.  The ones that most amaze me are the ones who labor behind the scenes and pray.  There are lots of them and I do believe that they are changing the face of my home town and the valley I live in and love.  National Day of Prayer and the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is a time to celebrate with them the power of prayer.  It is also a day to look to the future and position ourselves prayerfully before God and ask for more.  I want more.
